Train men in the trades. Build skill and character. Serve the neighborhood.

Train

Current focus

Exposure comes first. Hands-on workshops introduce men to carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and automotive work, taught by working and licensed tradesmen.

Build

Skill and character, built together. Show up on time, finish the job, work safely, and work as a team. Every training day includes lunch and Bible study.

Serve

Skills put to work for others. Men serve Sandtown neighbors with safety and home repairs, and those ready for more move toward paid apprenticeship.

The training space

A shop built for learning.

Our warehouse at 2304 Pennsylvania Ave in Baltimore is laid out as a row of training bays, one for each trade, with a conference room for instruction and a break room for lunch and Bible study.

How it started

It began with a conversation.

In 2020, Minister Donovan Anderson met Wilbur Butler, a certified welder and licensed contractor with a deep love for God, for young men, and for the trades. In early 2022 the two began meeting twice a week to design a program that would train men in the trades, and in March 2022 the name The Carpenter's Son was chosen.

We are grateful to Wilbur for helping plant the seed. The work continues today on the foundation he helped lay.

Donated church pews are being reclaimed and turned into handcrafted wood goods, built by men in the program.

Why the name

We anticipate there will be a moment when neighbors talk among each other about the Carpenter's Son. But unlike in Nazareth, when one neighbor asks, "Isn't that the carpenter's son?" the other will say,

"Yes! That was Jesus that served us this day."
